Hampstead Garden Suburb Free Church stands on Central Square in Hampstead Garden Suburb, within the London Borough of Barnet. It faces St Jude’s Church across the square and is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its distinctive low dome provides a visual contrast with the neighbouring church’s spire.
The congregation first gathered in 1909, after local Christians decided to hold separate Anglican and Free Church services, and it was formally established in 1910. Work on the church began in January 1911, and worship commenced there that October, although the western end remained unfinished until the 1960s. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the building as part of his wider architectural work on Central Square. Inside are Tuscan-style columns set upon brick bases, a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a restrained pastel colour scheme. Two panels commemorating those lost in war were designed by Percy Delf Smith.
