About Gravel Pit Chapel

Gravel Pit Chapel was a Nonconformist place of worship in Hackney, London. It is no longer active: the later chapel was demolished in 1969 after its site was acquired for housing. Its burial ground remains, with information about several people interred there.

The congregation was founded in 1715–1716 by Presbyterians and took its name from nearby gravel workings beside a Mare Street bowling green. In 1809 it relocated to Paradise Place and increasingly adopted a Unitarian identity. The replacement building, designed without charge by Edmund Aikin, opened for worship in 1810. Arthur Ashpitel redesigned it in a Gothic style in 1858. Bombing damaged the chapel in 1940, and although repairs were finished in 1953, worship largely continued in Aspland Hall because the main building was costly to heat. Its final service, commemorating the congregation’s tercentenary, took place in 1966.
