Essex Unitarian Church is a Unitarian place of worship at 112 Palace Gardens Terrace in Kensington, London. Its congregation has an important place in the history of British Unitarianism, having developed from England’s earliest church founded explicitly around Unitarian belief. It remains based in Kensington today.
The congregation was established by Theophilus Lindsey in 1774, when Unitarian teaching was still unlawful. Its original London chapel was completed in 1778, before the congregation joined an existing Kensington group in the late nineteenth century. A temporary church of corrugated iron had been built on land donated by Sir James Clarke Lawrence. A permanent stone church opened there in 1887, but pollution later damaged its fabric. The unsafe steeple was taken down in 1960, and falling ice from an aircraft broke the roof in 1971. The deteriorating building was subsequently demolished and replaced by a modern church with additional facilities, where worship began in July 1977.
