About East Ham Baptist Church
East Ham Baptist Church stands on Plashet Grove in East Ham, within the London Borough of Newham. It is an active Baptist congregation that became increasingly multicultural as local communities changed through migration from Africa and Asia. Membership remained at about 100 from the 1980s into the early 2000s.
Services began in 1895 with support from the London Baptist Association, initially meeting in a temporary iron structure near Katherine Road and Victoria Avenue. The congregation transferred to its present building in 1901. Designed by Edgar Stones, it included a sanctuary seating 1,000, together with surrounding meeting spaces. Membership reached 972 by 1903, but fell sharply during and after the two world wars. From 1967, minister Humphrey Vellacott oversaw renewed growth, changes to the building and the development of younger ministers serving Baptist congregations across East London.
