About Christ Church New Southgate & Friern Barnet
Christ Church New Southgate & Friern Barnet is a Baptist and United Reformed church in Friern Barnet, London. It remains a place of Christian worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Completed in 1910 for the Congregational Union, the church was designed by George Baines in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Its layout takes the form of a Greek cross, with a prominent square tower rising at the south-west corner and adjoining rooms on the northern side. Red and white brick, stone and terracotta details are combined with roofs of coloured tiles. Elsie Chamberlain became minister in 1941 and later played a leading role in church life. She also helped establish the Congregational Federation in 1972.
