About Christ Church at Whetstone United Reformed Church
Christ Church at Whetstone United Reformed Church stood on Oakleigh Park North in Whetstone, north London. The congregation ceased meeting in 2020, bringing to an end a local history that began with independent gatherings during the late eighteenth century.
Meetings started in Whetstone in 1788 and transferred to Totteridge in 1817, initially taking place in homes. A chapel and schoolroom followed on Totteridge Lane in 1827. The congregation relocated to Oakleigh Park in 1888, where new church and school buildings opened. After a fire severely damaged the church in 1900, the surviving structure became a hall and replacement worship and school spaces were erected. Further substantial redevelopment took place in 1975 and 1976, producing another church building and flats. Its small Victorian pipe organ, made by Henry Jones in 1880 and known as Henry, was later moved to London Bridge station following the closure.
