About Chingford United Reformed Church
Chingford United Reformed Church stands on Buxton Road in Chingford, within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. It is a United Reformed place of worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The congregation began in 1888, gathering first at the Victoria Coffee Palace in Station Road. Land was acquired the following year and a temporary iron structure erected. Spicer Hall followed in 1890, designed by Rowland Plumbe, although it was later sold and converted into flats in 2004. The present church dates from 1910 and was designed by the Manchester architects John Diggle Mould and Samuel Joseph Mould, specialists in Nonconformist buildings. Red brick walls are detailed with bands of stone. The Buxton Road façade includes three doorways, a broad Gothic window with Art Nouveau leadwork, and a pinnacled tower crowned by a copper-covered spire. Inside, corner arches give the square nave an octagonal form, while a stone screen separates it from the many-sided sanctuary.
