About Carlton Cinema, Islington
Carlton Cinema, Islington is an active church and events venue on Essex Road in London. Known as Gracepoint since reopening in 2015, it accommodates 900 people. The former cinema and bingo hall is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Completed in 1930, the building was designed by George Coles as a 2,226-seat venue combining film and variety entertainment. Its Art Deco design reflects the Egyptian-inspired fashion that followed the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Black, white and coloured faience covers the frontage, where a decorative lotus motif extends across both levels, while yellow brick is used elsewhere. Egyptian details appear in the predominantly Empire-style foyer, contrasting with the French Renaissance character of the auditorium. The cinema became part of ABC in 1935 and was converted into a Mecca Bingo hall in 1972. After bingo ceased in 2007, an evangelical Christian congregation acquired the property. A renovation followed in 2025.
