About Boone's Chapel
Boone’s Chapel is a compact Grade I listed structure on Lee High Road in Lewisham, within Greater London. It stands near the Merchant Taylors’ almshouses and is one of only two buildings in the borough with Grade I designation. An architects’ practice now occupies the chapel, which admits visitors on 30 days annually.
Christopher Boone engaged Sir Christopher Wren to produce the design, and the building dates from 1683. Robert Hooke, Wren’s associate, may have directed the work on site. Its single level occupies roughly 45 square metres, with walls of red brick complemented by Portland stone window surrounds and dressed corner masonry. Above is a pyramidal roof crowned by an open wooden cupola. Boone and his wife, Mary, were buried here. Following later use as a reading room and a long period of neglect, the chapel was restored in 2008, alongside the creation of a small physic garden.
