About St Mary's Church, Ilford

St Mary’s Church, Ilford is an Anglican place of worship serving a parish in Ilford, Greater London. Situated within Redbridge, it remains a parish church of the Church of England.

The parish was formed in 1830 when Great Ilford was separated from Barking, with the new building finished a year later. Robert Westley Hall-Dare MP provided the main financial support, and Mary Hall-Dare, his daughter, set its first stone. Bishop of London Charles James Blomfield conducted the opening on 9 June 1831, although a vicar was not installed until 1837. The tower dates from 1866, while the chancel, Lady Chapel and vestries were introduced in 1920. Edward Arthur Fellowes Prynne produced a series of fourteen devotional paintings in 1916, including one honouring Gerald Eardley-Wilmot, who was fatally wounded while serving in France. Prynne added three painted altar panels in 1919.
