About Ilford Hospital Chapel
Ilford Hospital Chapel occupies a site beside Ilford Hill in Ilford, Greater London. Formally dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Thomas Becket, it continues to host Thursday Communion. Established around 1130, it is Redbridge’s oldest surviving structure and has been designated Grade II* since 1954. The adjoining former almshouses are now flats managed by the Abbess Adelicia Charity.
Adelicia, Abbess of Barking, created the medieval hospice during Stephen’s kingship for thirteen occupants. Mary Becket, Thomas Becket’s sister, later oversaw an enlargement of the chapel and added her brother’s dedication. Cement-rendered stonework supports tiled roofing, while the present nave and chancel are thought to result from rebuilding in the 1300s. A substantial Victorian restoration in 1889–90 added the northern porch, southern aisle, vestry and other spaces. Surviving features include restored medieval windows, Ninian Comper’s Lady Chapel reredos, glazing attributed to Henry Holiday and Edward Burne-Jones, and an organ fitted in the early 1900s.
