About St Andrew's Church, Hornchurch
St Andrew’s Church, Hornchurch is a Church of England place of worship in Hornchurch, Greater London. Dating from 1401, it is recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance and has held Grade I listed status since 1955.
Christian worship has taken place at the site since at least 1163, when Henry II granted an earlier church to Hornchurch Priory. The present church is designed in the late Gothic style, with its tower and northern porch added during the fifteenth century. The tower houses ten bells, increased from six to eight in 1901 and to ten in 2001. Its oldest noted tenor bell dates to 1779. Memorials inside commemorate local families and figures including Thomas Clutterbuck, while the churchyard includes Commonwealth war graves for 37 First World War personnel and four from the Second World War.
