About St. Mary the Virgin
St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England church on Church Road in Hayes, Greater London. Built partly during the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The flint structure developed over several centuries. Its nave and chancel date from the 13th century, while the north aisle and tower were added in the 15th century. The south aisle, south porch and lychgate followed in the 16th century. The Tudor nave roof bears symbols associated with the Crucifixion and the royal arms of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Victorian restoration brought several new windows, with later glass depicting Saints Anselm and Nicholas. Other notable features include a Coronation window, a triptych by Edward Arthur Fellowes Prynne and a carved reredos by his brother George. The church also contains Sir Edward Fenner’s elaborate altar tomb and a brass commemorating Robert Lellee, rector in 1370.
