About St. Mary The Blessed Virgin

St. Mary The Blessed Virgin is an active Church of England parish church on Addington Village Road in Croydon. Serving Addington village and neighbouring parts of New Addington and Forestdale, it follows the Modern Catholic tradition. The church has been protected at Grade I since 1951 and has close links with Addington Palace. Five former Canterbury archbishops who resided nearby are buried here, with a memorial to them in the churchyard.

Christian worship is recorded on the site from at least 1080, and the building retains an eleventh-century chancel and windows. Its narrow south aisle dates from the early thirteenth century and has a sloping roofline associated with its former thatched covering. The bell tower reached its present appearance in 1876. Its six bells include one thought to date from around 1380 and two from the seventeenth century; the ring was restored in 1957. Other features include the richly ornamented chancel, completed in 1898, and a stained-glass memorial honouring Addington’s Home Guard battalion.
