Croydon Minster stands on Church Street in Croydon’s Old Town, within Greater London. This Church of England place of worship serves both the local parish and the borough in a civic capacity. Built around 1450, it is protected at Grade I and received the honorary title of minster in 2011.
The site’s Christian origins extend to the middle Saxon age, when a shared body of priests may have ministered across the nearby area. Croydon’s church is recorded in the Domesday survey, and evidence of its dedication to St John the Baptist dates to 1347. Its late medieval form was largely Perpendicular Gothic. Fire devastated the structure in 1867, prompting reconstruction by George Gilbert Scott from 1867 to 1869. His scheme preserved medieval elements including the west tower and south porch. Inside are memorials associated with six Archbishops of Canterbury, alongside a large organ with four manuals, principally made in 1869. Twelve locally cast bells, installed in 1936, hang in the tower.
