About St Mary the Virgin, Hayes, Bromley
St Mary the Virgin, Hayes, Bromley is a Church of England parish church in Old Hayes, Bromley, Greater London. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it stands in the historic part of the village, which was separated from later development when the railway arrived during the 1860s. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Founded in the 12th century, the church retains medieval fabric alongside extensive Victorian Gothic Revival work by Sir George Gilbert Scott and John Oldrid Scott. A northern aisle was constructed in 1856, the tower was altered in 1861, and a southern aisle and organ transept were completed in 1879. Three similarly proportioned sections form the aisled nave, each covered by its own roof. Surviving early details include 13th-century arches, 15th-century wooden roof timbers and a narrow lancet window. Memorials recall William Pitt the Elder, William Pitt the Younger and Sir Vicary Gibbs. A meeting room added behind the church in 2005 serves local groups.
