About Church of St Paulinus, Crayford

The Church of St Paulinus, Crayford is a Church of England place of worship in Bexleyheath, Greater London. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is among the six historic churches within the London Borough of Bexley.

Its oldest surviving fabric dates to around 1100 and is thought to be Norman, with dark grey tufa blocks among the early materials. Medieval alterations included the addition and later removal of a southern aisle and chapel, followed by the porch, vestry, bell tower and Howbury Chapel during the 15th and early 16th centuries. A fire in 1628 destroyed the roof and early monuments, requiring several years of repair. Further restoration took place in 1862, while wartime damage required later attention. The building has two equally proportioned nave sections, an unusual arrangement in medieval English church architecture. An organ formerly used by a German Lutheran congregation in King’s Cross was installed in 1976.
