About Mary Immaculate and St Peter, New Barnet
Mary Immaculate and St Peter is a Roman Catholic church on Somerset Road in New Barnet, part of the London Borough of Barnet. It is the church of the local Catholic parish and comes under Westminster’s Roman Catholic diocese.
Catholic parish life in New Barnet was formally organised in 1912, and the existing building was completed in 1938. Its architect was Thomas Henry Birchall Scott, who produced designs for several Catholic places of worship in London. Scott was also a past president of the Royal Photographic Society. The church is restrained in appearance, and its design includes the curved arch form frequently found in his work. Its construction followed the earlier growth of New Barnet after the railway reached the suburb during the mid-nineteenth century.
