About Church of St James
The Church of St James stands in School Lane, Quedgeley, within Gloucester, and is part of the Church of England. It is a Grade II* listed building, reflecting the significance of its surviving medieval and later fabric.
A chapel occupied the site by 1095, and land was granted for a church during the following century. The present building dates from 1210. Its chancel was added in the 1200s, the south aisle followed in the 1300s, and the tower was completed later that century. Built of ashlar beneath a Cotswold stone roof, the church underwent extensive work in 1857, when H. Woodyer redesigned the nave and chancel and created the north aisle. Notable details include a twelfth-century round font set within an octagonal mosaic-panelled surround, medieval glass in the south aisle, and an east window installed by Hardman in 1856 depicting the Crucifixion and Resurrection.
