About St Andrew's Cathedral
St Andrew’s Cathedral stands on Clyde Street in central Glasgow, along the northern bank of the Clyde. This Roman Catholic place of worship is dedicated to Saint Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint. It is the Archbishop of Glasgow’s official seat and the principal cathedral of the archdiocese. The building has Category A listed protection.
Plans were prepared in 1814 by James Gillespie Graham, who chose a Neo-Gothic design, and the church opened in 1816. Restrictions affecting Catholic worship influenced its restrained scale and the absence of both a steeple and a bell tower. After becoming a pro-cathedral in 1884, it underwent extensive alterations by Pugin and Pugin. Metropolitan cathedral rank followed in 1947. A pipe organ made in 1903 by Henry Willis & Sons was transferred from Elgin Place Congregational Church in 1981, then dismantled and stored during refurbishment in 2009–10.
