About Pollokshields Church of Scotland
Pollokshields Church of Scotland is a Church of Scotland parish church at 525 Shields Road in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow. Dating from the Victorian period, the church remains a parish place of worship and is protected as a Category B listed building.
The congregation began in 1875 and initially worshipped in its hall. Sir William Stirling Maxwell laid the building’s foundation stone in 1877, and the completed church opened in 1878. Robert Baldie designed it in a Gothic Revival style, with polished granite columns, sandstone bases and an elaborate timber roof. Its most prominent external feature is the south-west steeple, which reaches almost 55 metres and has four clock faces. Twenty-five stained-glass windows were dedicated in 1889. Alterations in 1913 included marble paving in the chancel and a Harrison & Harrison organ housed in carved oak. A memorial unveiled in 1921 commemorates 34 men associated with the congregation who died during the First World War.
