About St Winefride's Well
St Winefride’s Well is a Roman Catholic shrine in Holywell, Flintshire, centred on a sacred spring associated with the seventh-century martyr St Winefride. Pilgrims have continued to visit through periods of religious change, and the site remains a place of worship and pilgrimage. The well complex is a scheduled monument and is cared for by Cadw.
The chapel over the spring dates from around 1500 and consists of an upper chapel with a crypt below. The upper space has also served as a courthouse and day school, but is now used for worship. In the crypt, the spring rises within a basin shaped as a star, alongside an eighteenth-century figure of St Winefride. Mining caused the original water supply to fail in 1917, after which water was channelled from another subterranean source. Two bathing buildings had previously been added in 1869.
