About Church of St Beuno and St Mary
The Church of St Beuno and St Mary is an Anglican church in Holywell, Flintshire, within the Diocese of St Asaph. Designated Grade I, it has historic links with one of Flintshire’s early parishes. From its position above the Dee estuary, the building preserves a medieval character alongside memorials created between the 1600s and 1800s.
The site is traditionally associated with a foundation established by St Beuno during the seventh century, supported by inscribed stones found nearby. Whitford and its church appear in the Domesday survey of 1086, while Mary was added to the dedication after Norman rule reached northern Wales. The fabric consists of neatly laid sandstone beneath slate-covered roofs. Its plan includes two aisles, a porch on the southern side and a west tower rising through three stages. The north aisle is the earliest remaining element, probably originating in the later Middle Ages. Ambrose Poynter oversaw extensive reconstruction in 1842–43, followed by internal refurbishment in 1876 and 1888. Three seventeenth-century bells are still used.
