About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church stands in Cilcain, Flintshire, and remains an active Church of England parish church. It belongs to the Bro Famau group of parishes within the Diocese of St Asaph and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Recorded in 1291 and medieval in origin, the church retains some 13th-century fabric in its northern nave. A southern nave and western tower were added during the 15th century. After fire destroyed the roof of the north nave in 1532, it remained uncovered until rebuilding in 1746. Built from several kinds of stone beneath slate roofing, the church has two naves, a south porch and a battlemented tower. Ambrose Poynter directed restoration in 1845–46, followed by extensive work by John Douglas in 1888–89. Notable interior details include an ornate timber roof, stained glass depicting the Crucifixion, Welsh text panels dated 1809 and monuments from 1731 and 1832.
