About St John's Church, Church Street, Inverkeithing
St John’s Church, Church Street, Inverkeithing, is a former place of worship in Rosyth, Fife. It has been protected as a Category B listed building since 1979. The congregation joined with Inverkeithing Parish Church in 2006, and the property passed into private ownership following its sale in 2022.
The church was erected in 1752 as a Burgher chapel after 127 people withdrew from Inverkeithing Parish Church during a dispute over the appointment of Andrew Richardson as minister. Rising attendance led to substantial alterations in 1799, when the structure was made wider and taller and galleries were installed. By the 1830s, its congregation represented about half of the burgh’s residents. A renovation followed in 1882. Despite internal changes, much of the building’s late 18th-century form has survived. Over time, the congregation belonged to several Presbyterian traditions before entering the Church of Scotland in 1929.
