About Burntisland Parish Church

Burntisland Parish Church stands on East Leven Street in the Fife town of Burntisland. This Church of Scotland parish church dates from 1592 and remains notable as an early Scottish church erected following the Reformation. Its architectural and historic significance is recognised through its Category A listing.

The church has an unusual square layout, with an interior measuring 18 metres on each side. Arches extend diagonally from four corner piers to define a smaller central square. A gallery had its own exit so that sailors could depart when tides required them to set sail. In 1601, the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly met here and proposed a fresh Bible translation to James VI, which later developed into the King James Version. Samuel Neilson reconstructed the tower in 1748, while David Vertue enlarged the windows and removed numerous pews in 1822. Maritime carvings decorate the interior, the bell dates to 1708, and Andrew Carnegie funded the organ. Extensive restoration took place during the 1990s.
