About Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church in Woodford Green, Essex. It has Grade II* listed status, reflecting its recognised architectural and historic significance. Its parish was subsequently joined with All Saints Chigwell Row, before a further union with St Winifred’s in 1994.
Samuel Harsnett served as vicar between 1597 and 1605, later becoming Archbishop of York. He established two local schools in 1619 and was interred in the church in 1631. Inside is a memorial mounted on the wall for Thomas Colshill, a politician of the Tudor period. The churchyard holds the remains of Thomas Edwards, who received the Victoria Cross for his conduct during the Battle of Tamai in 1884. St Winifred’s, built in 1935, originally served as an additional chapel associated with the church.
