About Chapel of St Helen, Wicken Bonhunt
The Chapel of St Helen stands at Bonhunt Farm in Wicken Bonhunt, north-west Essex, near the B1038 between Newport and Buntingford. Now maintained by the Diocese of Chelmsford, it is a scheduled monument and hosts a service once a year, organised by local volunteers. At other times, the building is generally closed, although its exterior is visible from the road and a nearby public footpath.
The chapel dates from about the 11th century and is among the earliest buildings still standing in eastern England. Constructed from flint and pebbles beneath a thatched roof, it has a chancel and an unusually narrow nave. Two windows dating to the 12th century survive in the south and west walls. Substantial work was carried out during the 13th century and again around 1918, when historic details were retained. After its dissolution in 1543, the building stood unused and later served at different times as a stable and a shed.
