About Holy Innocents Church, High Beach
Holy Innocents Church, High Beach is a Church of England parish church near Waltham Abbey in Essex. Set in the village of High Beach, it remains a place of Anglican worship and has held Grade II listed status since 1956.
Thomas Charles Baring commissioned the church to succeed a chapel about a mile away. Arthur Blomfield designed it, with construction finished in June 1873 and consecration following on 18 August 1883. Its Gothic Revival design draws on medieval English forms and uses rough-faced stone, limestone detailing and clay roof tiles in a cross-shaped plan. A limestone spire with shingles rises above the surrounding trees. Inside are a decorative pulpit, choir stalls, memorial glass for the Baring family and a Henry Willis pipe organ installed in 1878. A bomb explosion in 1945 destroyed three lancet windows at the east end; James Powell and Sons supplied replacements in 1948.
