About St Andrew's Church, Willingale
St Andrew’s Church, Willingale is a redundant Church of England church in the village of Willingale, near Ongar in Essex. This Grade II* listed building is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It shares a churchyard with St Christopher’s Church, which stands about 46 metres away.
The nave originated in the 12th century, while the chancel was built in the 15th century. Restoration during the 1800s included the addition of a south porch and north vestry. Flint rubble forms the main fabric, with freestone, puddingstone, clunch and reused Roman brick also present beneath tiled roofs. A weatherboarded timber belfry and spire rise at the western end. Notable survivals include 12th-century windows and doorways, medieval ironwork, a late 14th-century octagonal font, 15th-century piscinae and an altar slab carved with crosses. Memorials from 1614 commemorate children of the rector, and the tower contains two bells, including one bearing a 15th-century inscription.
