About Church of St Andrew

The Church of St Andrew is an active Church of England parish church in Marks Tey, Essex. This Grade I listed building has served the village across many centuries and received its protected status in 1965.

The church has origins around 1100, when its nave was constructed from layered mixed rubble, puddingstone and reused Roman brick. The chancel dates from a rebuilding of about 1330 and contains stone clergy seats and a basin used for cleansing communion vessels. Its arch is from the middle or later 14th century, while a sealed doorway once led to a rood screen. The west tower and modest spire are 16th-century work, with brick and rubble below and timber forming the upper sections. Other additions include a 16th-century south porch and an early 17th-century font cover. A thorough restoration took place during the 19th century. Susan McCarthy’s Millennium window depicts aspects of local history alongside an enduring Christian message.
