About St Mary the Virgin's Church, Little Bromley
St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Little Bromley, is a former Anglican place of worship near Manningtree in Essex. Standing south of Little Bromley beside Little Bromley Hall, it is a Grade II* listed building now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The nave originated in the early 1100s, while the chancel was reconstructed during the 1300s. The west tower began in the early 15th century, with its brick upper section and timber-framed south porch added in the following century. Built mainly from puddingstone rubble with stone detailing and red-tiled roofs, the church was restored in both the 19th and 20th centuries. Inside are a carved octagonal font from the 15th or 16th century, an oak pulpit, Hanoverian royal arms and a First World War memorial. A hand-pumped organ, probably made around 1820, stands in the western gallery. Four bells include two cast between about 1392 and 1418.
