About St Mary's Church, Lawford
St Mary’s Church, Lawford, is an active Church of England parish church on Church Hill in Lawford, near Manningtree, Essex. It belongs to the Diocese of Chelmsford and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Part of the nave’s southern wall may pre-date 1200. The chancel, porch and original tower were constructed around 1340, while the tower was rebuilt during both the 16th and 17th centuries. Flint, septaria and brick form the main structure, complemented by limestone details and tiled roofing. A northern aisle was added in 1826, and E. G. Paley restored the chancel interior in 1853. Further restoration and repair took place in the 19th and 21st centuries. Notable features include a medieval piscina and three-seat sedilia in the chancel, an octagonal pulpit from about 1906, and three bells cast in 1667, 1714 and 1907.
