About Church of St Clement

The Church of St Clement is an active Church of England parish church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Dedicated to St Clement of Rome, an early Christian martyr associated with seafarers, it occupies an elevated site above the harbour. The church follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition and offers several services each week. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

A church may have stood here by the 13th century, while parts of the chancel possibly survive from the 14th century. Much of the present structure was rebuilt in Kentish ragstone and flint around the end of the 15th century or beginning of the 16th. Its 80-foot western tower became a familiar marker beside the Thames Estuary. Later additions include a Tudor brick porch, an eastward extension to the chancel in 1872, a south aisle dating from 1897, and a memorial Lady Chapel designed by Sir Charles Nicholson in 1913. Notable fittings include a medieval font, stained glass by several prominent makers, and historic tombs.
