About Parish Church of St Mary, Kelvedon

The Parish Church of St Mary, Kelvedon serves the local Church of England parish from its position near the village’s south-western edge. Dating from the 12th century, it remains in parish use and has held Grade I listed status since 1967.

The earliest surviving fabric is probably the nave’s north-west corner, constructed from rubble flint in the early 1100s. A northern aisle and its arcade were introduced around 1230, with a southern counterpart following about 1250. The chancel was lengthened around 1360, and the clerestory dates from the 15th century. A north chapel and vestry were added early in the 16th century. During the 19th century, a chapel was built on the south side and the southern porch was largely reconstructed.
