About Roydon United Reformed Church
Roydon United Reformed Church is a place of worship on Harlow Road in Roydon, Essex, within the Harlow area. Its present name reflects its United Reformed affiliation. The congregation marked two centuries since the establishment of an Independent church in Roydon with a commemorative weekend in 2011.
Its origins date to 1798, when James Brown, who came from Harlow, established a Baptist meeting place on the site. The congregation was reorganised as an Independent church in 1811. A replacement chapel was constructed in 1851, after which it became associated with the Essex Congregational Union. A minister’s house followed on the eastern side in 1868. The chapel underwent alterations and expansion in 1933, and records show that the congregation numbered 31 members in 1981.
