About Old St Mary's Church, West Bergholt
Old St Mary’s Church, West Bergholt, is a former Anglican place of worship near Colchester in Essex. Set apart from the village near West Bergholt Hall, it is protected at Grade I and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. It ceased regular use in 1975 and passed to the Trust in 1976.
Archaeological investigation dates the north wall to around 1000, making it Anglo-Saxon in origin. An eastern apse was later replaced by a rectangular chancel, which was lengthened around 1300. A south aisle and three-arched arcade followed in the 14th century, while the medieval bellcote was built in two stages using earlier timbers. The church has conglomerate walls, tiled roofing and a wooden porch raised on brickwork. Notable details include reused Romanesque masonry, Y-shaped window tracery in the chancel, substantial roof beams, a western gallery carried on Ionic columns, a trefoil-headed piscina and Jacobean royal arms.
