About Church of St Leonard

The Church of St Leonard serves as an active Anglican parish church in Lexden, within the Essex town of Colchester. Dating in its present form largely from the 19th century, it is recognised as a Grade II listed building.

Christian worship on the site can be traced to the early 1100s. After the medieval church deteriorated beyond safe use, it was removed in 1820 and Mark Greystone Thompson’s Gothic Revival successor was finished the following year. John Charles Traylen designed the enlarged eastern end and adjoining northern chapel, constructed from 1892 to 1894 with flint facing and stone at the base. The spacious, aisleless nave is rendered and contains a timber gallery resting on narrow metal pillars. Above the square western tower stands an octagonal spire sheathed in copper. Interior features include stained glass made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, two further windows by Charles Eamer Kempe, and a richly detailed monument commemorating Richard Hewitt, who died in 1771.
