About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary is an active Church of England parish church at Buttsbury, near Billericay in Essex. Standing amid farmland beside the River Wid, it is designated Grade II* and holds Sunday worship according to the Book of Common Prayer. With no electricity, services are lit by candles.

Although a church was recorded here in the 12th century, most of the present structure is medieval. Its compact nave and chancel date largely from the 1300s, while the broader north and south aisles were added in the following century, chiefly using flint rubble with dressed stone. Roman tiles are incorporated into the walls. The west tower was rebuilt in brick during Victorian restoration around 1876, when the spire was shortened and a south porch added. A 12th-century oak door retains distinctive medieval ironwork, including serpent-shaped hinges. Other features include a medieval Last Judgement painting, two 17th-century memorial slabs and an unusual First World War memorial.
