About All Saints Church, East Horndon
All Saints Church, East Horndon is a redundant Anglican church near Basildon, Essex. Standing north of the village, it is listed at Grade II* and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The Tyrell family of Heron Hall built the church in the late 15th century, replacing an earlier structure. Its red-brick walls use English bond, with stone detailing, and the plan includes a nave, chancel, chapels, two-storey transepts, south porch and western tower. The tower’s upper section was reconstructed in the 17th century. After closing in 1898, the building was restored by George Frederick Bodley over the following decade. Wartime bomb damage later weakened the structure and destroyed much of its stained glass. Surviving features include a medieval glass fragment, carved roof bosses, Tyrell family memorials and monuments to the Powell family, ancestors of Robert Baden-Powell.
