About Priory Church
Priory Church, also known as St Mary’s Episcopal Church, stands in South Queensferry, near Edinburgh. It is an active congregation within the Scottish Episcopal Church and holds Category A listed status. The building is the sole surviving medieval Carmelite church in the British Isles that continues to be used for worship.
A Carmelite friary was established at Queensferry in 1330, while the church itself dates from the middle of the 15th century. After the Reformation, it passed to the Dundas family and served as the local parish church until 1635, later becoming their burial place. The nave and remaining monastic structures were eventually demolished, leaving the choir, tower and south transept. Henry Seymour and John Kinross directed restoration completed in 1889, and the church was reconsecrated the next year. Today, the former choir forms the nave, while the south transept serves as the baptistery.
