About Church of the Sacred Heart

The Church of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic parish at 28 Lauriston Street, Edinburgh. Standing between Tollcross and the Grassmarket, near the Old Town, it is served by the Society of Jesus. The church remains active, with Mass celebrated throughout the week, and holds Category A listed status. The neighbouring Jesuit community also supports chaplaincy work at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Bishop James Gillis invited the Jesuits to establish the parish, and worship began in a provisional chapel in Hunter’s Close in 1859. Designed by the Jesuit priest Richard Vaughan, the completed church received its inaugural Mass on 8 July 1860. An organ was added in 1907 and later altered in 1963 and 1974. Derek Clarke created a mural over the altar in 1957, although it was subsequently concealed during changes following the Second Vatican Council. Later structural work included strengthening the roof trusses in 1996 and repairing the north wall in 1998.
