About St Anthony of Padua Church

St Anthony of Padua Church is an active Catholic parish in Rye, East Sussex. Standing in Watchbell Street, south of Lamb House, it is cared for by the Conventual Franciscans. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building and continues to hold regular Masses on Sundays and weekdays.

The present church replaced St Walburga’s, which had occupied the site since 1900 but became too small for its growing congregation. Work on the replacement began in 1927, with the foundation stone blessed that October, and the completed building opened on 30 June 1929. John Bernard Mendham designed it with Romanesque Revival architecture, while the sanctuary draws on Byzantine Revival forms. Its plan follows the shape of a Greek cross. The Franciscans had administered the earlier parish church from 1910, establishing Rye as one of their earliest English centres after the Reformation.
