About St Mary's Church, Glynde
St Mary’s Church, Glynde is a Church of England place of worship at Glynde in the Lewes area of East Sussex. Completed in 1765, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Richard Trevor, Bishop of Durham and a member of the family associated with neighbouring Glynde Place, commissioned the church to replace a deteriorating medieval predecessor. Sir Thomas Robinson, 1st Baronet, designed it in the Palladian tradition, while Lewes builder John Morris carried out the work. Its exterior combines dressed flint with an ashlar plinth. Trevor’s arms appear in Portland stone on the western pediment, with an open stone bellcote above. The rectangular interior retains many original fittings, including enclosed pews and a curved ceiling. A western gallery was added in 1841 to provide further seating.
