About Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel

Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel is a place of worship in Lower Dicker, near Hailsham in East Sussex. The church continues to serve a Strict Baptist congregation and remains associated with the Gospel Standard tradition. It has a burial ground and stands in a rural setting, set back from the main road.

Founded in 1837, the chapel opened in 1838 under its earlier name, the Dicker Chapel. It was initially intended for both Calvinistic Baptist and Independent congregations, but became exclusively Strict Baptist in 1839. Designed in a Classical Georgian style, the original building accommodated about 400 people and included a schoolroom and stabling for those arriving by horse and cart. A substantial enlargement in 1874 increased its capacity, while the burial ground was extended in 1880.
