About Union Chapel
Union Chapel is a former Nonconformist chapel in central Brighton, East Sussex. It was the town’s earliest place of worship outside the Church of England and served several Christian congregations over roughly three centuries. Religious use ended in 1988, when the building was converted into a pub. It is protected as a Grade II listed building for its architectural significance.
The chapel’s foundation date is uncertain, with dates between 1683 and 1698 recorded. Initially Presbyterian, it later accommodated Independent ministers, and its name reflected this shared use. A minister’s house was added around 1800, followed by an enlargement about a decade later. In 1825 the building was extensively redesigned in a Classical manner, combining Greek and Egyptian Revival influences. The work is associated with members of Brighton’s Wilds and Busby architectural partnership. An eastern wall of cobbles and flint, finished with red-brick details, may survive from either the seventeenth-century structure or the later extension.
