About St Peter's Church, Brighton

St Peter's Church, Brighton is an active Church of England parish in central Brighton, East Sussex. It occupies an island between London Road and Lewes Road, near the city centre. Brighton’s principal parish church from 1873 until 2007, it resumed regular worship in 2009 and remains in use today. The building is listed at Grade II*.

Originally founded as an additional chapel for St Nicholas, the church was constructed between 1824 and 1828 after the young Charles Barry won a design competition. Its bold Gothic Revival architecture draws on late medieval English styles and is chiefly faced in pale Portland stone. Barry’s six-sided apse was removed in 1898 and replaced by a larger, square-ended chancel of contrasting Sussex sandstone, completed in 1906. Notable features include glass by Charles Eamer Kempe, a window commemorating Queen Victoria, and reredos panels by Edward Arthur Fellowes Prynne.
