About St Luke's Church, Queen's Park, Brighton
St Luke's Church, Queen's Park, Brighton is a Church of England parish church in the Queen's Park neighbourhood of Brighton, East Sussex. Standing at a corner on Queen's Park Road, it regained its own parish in 2009 after several decades within the Parish of the Resurrection. Its architectural interest is recognised through Grade II listing.
Work on the site commenced in 1881, with Richard Durnford, Bishop of Chichester, placing the ceremonial first stone the following year. Sir Arthur Blomfield completed the building in 1885, using chiefly flint with carved stone details in an Early English Gothic Revival design. The spacious interior contains aisles, wooden roofs and slender pointed windows. An eight-sided tower was planned to rise considerably higher beneath a 160-foot spire, but insufficient funds left both unfinished. Features include Kempe glass in the Lady chapel, an ornate reredos divided into five panels, and two First World War memorials installed in 1918 and 1920.
