About Saint Paul's Church
Saint Paul's Church is an active Anglican parish church on West Street in central Brighton, East Sussex. Dedicated to Paul of Tarsus, it remains the earliest surviving church commissioned by the Reverend Henry Michell Wagner that continues in Anglican use. The building is recognised for its architectural and historic importance with Grade II* listed status.
Wagner acquired the site in 1846, replacing a small fishermen’s chapel dating from 1830. Richard Cromwell Carpenter designed the new church, which opened in 1848 and was consecrated the following year. Its Gothic Revival exterior combines knapped flint with Caen limestone detailing. Inside are a nave, chancel, vestries and an organ chamber; a former chapel beneath the church later served as a library. The main stained-glass windows were designed by A. W. N. Pugin. Changes made in 1861 included a western narthex, alterations to the rood screen and a triptych reredos by Edward Burne-Jones.
