About Montpelier Place Baptist Church, Brighton
Montpelier Place Baptist Church, Brighton, was a Strict Baptist place of worship in the Montpelier area of Brighton, East Sussex. Opened in 1967, it closed in 2012 after its congregation declined during the early 21st century. The disused premises were later occupied by squatters and demolished around the turn of 2017 to 2018. A residential development of houses and flats was completed on the site in December 2019.
The church replaced the Baptist Tabernacle in West Street, whose congregation had been established in 1834 as an Independent Calvinistic body before adopting Strict Baptist doctrine in 1906. The earlier Neoclassical chapel was demolished in 1965 during council redevelopment. Its successor had a markedly different, austere Modernist design that recalled aspects of Coventry Cathedral. In its later years, the congregation belonged to a group representing Reformed Evangelical churches.
